If you’re reading this, you’re probably staring at a globe valve that’s dripping like a leaky faucet at 2 a.m. – trust me, I’ve been there. I’m part of the team that supplies globe valves to all kinds of operations, from small manufacturing shops to big oil and gas sites, and let’s be real: nothing kills productivity faster than a valve that won’t stop leaking. Globe Valve

I see mistakes all the time when folks try to fix these things themselves. They grab a wrench, crank down on the stem like they’re trying to move a boulder, and then end up with a valve that’s worse – either still leaking or not opening at all. That’s why I wanted to break this down step by step, like I’d explain it to a tech just starting out on our supply team. No fancy jargon, no skipped steps, just real stuff that actually works. And before we dive in: if you’re working with high-pressure lines or hazardous materials, always, always call a pro first. This guide is for low-to-medium pressure applications where you’ve got a little experience under your belt.

First, let’s get one thing straight: globe valves leak for two main reasons. Either the stem packing is worn out (that’s the rubber or graphite stuff around the stem where it moves up and down) or the seat disc is damaged (the round part that presses against the valve seat to shut it off). Sometimes it’s both. Let’s start with the easiest fix first – stem packing – because that’s what causes about 70% of leaks we see.

Before you do anything, shut off the line! I can’t stress this enough. If you work on a valve that’s under pressure, you’re going to have a geyser, and no one wants that. Close the upstream and downstream isolation valves, then open the drain plug on the valve body to let any leftover fluid or gas escape. Give it a minute to fully depressurize – don’t skip this part. Grab your personal protective equipment too: gloves, safety glasses, maybe a face shield if it’s a dirty site. I learned this the hard way years ago when a little bit of water shot out and burned my eye (silly me, forgot the glasses).

Once the line’s dead and drained, you need to take the valve out of the pipe? Wait, no – actually, you can do the packing job in place most of the time, which is way faster. Here’s how: first, loosen the bolts on the top flange that holds the packing gland. The packing gland is that metal ring around the stem that’s squishing the packing down. Don’t remove the bolts all the way, just loosen them a quarter turn each, alternating so the flange doesn’t twist. Then, use a small pick or a flathead screwdriver to pull out the old packing. Be careful not to scratch the stem – if you nick it, the new packing won’t seal right, and you’ll be back here next week.

Now, the new packing. Make sure you get the right type! If you’re handling chemicals, use PTFE packing. For high heat, graphite. Ask your supply rep (that’s us!) if you’re not sure – we get this question every single day, and we’re happy to help. Cut the new packing into rings that are the same size as the old ones, each ring slightly overlapping. Don’t just stuff a big chunk in – that creates gaps. Slide each ring onto the stem, pressing them down firmly with your pick as you go. For most globe valves, you’ll need 2 or 3 rings. Once all the new packing is in, tighten the packing gland bolts evenly – again, alternate sides, a quarter turn each. Don’t crank them super tight right now; you can adjust later.

Test it! Slowly open the isolation valves, then turn the globe valve on and off a couple times to work the new packing. If it’s still leaking a little, tighten the gland bolts another eighth turn each. Stop as soon as the leak stops – if you tighten too much, the stem will be too hard to turn, and you’ll end up damaging the packing or the stem.

If replacing the packing didn’t fix the leak, that means it’s probably the seat disc. That’s the second common culprit. Let’s walk through that. First, you’ll need to remove the valve from the line this time. Loosen the pipe fittings on both sides, then lift the valve out (get a buddy to help – these things are heavy). Once it’s out, take it to a workbench, make sure it’s still depressurized.

Now, take the top cap off. Remove the bolts holding the bonnet (that’s the metal cover on top) and lift the bonnet straight up. You’ll see the stem, and at the bottom, the seat disc. Inspect it – if it’s scratched, pitted, or the rubber coating is worn off, that’s your problem. Also check the valve seat inside the body – sometimes the seat gets damaged too, and you’ll need to replace that as well.

If it’s just the seat disc, swap it out. Match the size and type – flat disc for standard applications, serrated for throttling. If the seat is damaged, you’ll need to either re-face it or replace the valve seat. Here at our supply company, we have replacement seats and discs for almost every type of globe valve we sell, so you don’t have to buy a whole new valve if you don’t need to.

Before you put it back together, clean all the parts – the bonnet, stem, valve body, seat. Any dirt or grime will mess up the seal. Put the new seat disc on, align the stem, then lower the bonnet back down. Tighten the bonnet bolts evenly again, alternating sides, to avoid warping. Then, go back through the packing steps we talked about earlier – new packing, gland bolts, test. Once the valve is back together, put it back in the pipe, tighten the fittings, and test the whole system.

Wait, a few more quick tips I wish someone had told me when I started. First, lubricate the stem every few months – not too much, just a light coat of the right lubricant for your fluid. That prevents scratches and makes turning the valve easier. Second, don’t over-tighten the globe valve when you close it. A lot of folks think cranking it down like they’re tightening a wheel nut makes it seal better, but actually, it damages the seat disc over time, leading to leaks. Just close it until it stops, then give it a quarter turn more – that’s enough. Third, if your valve is old (like 10+ years), even if you fix the leak, keep an eye on it. Older valves wear out faster, so it might be time to upgrade if you’re having to repair it every few months.

I’ve seen so many folks waste money buying new valves when a $10 pack of packing or a $20 seat disc would’ve fixed the problem. That’s why our team stocks all the replacement parts you need, no matter what kind of globe valve you have. We work with all sizes, from 1-inch to 24-inch, and we can tell you exactly what parts you need if you shoot us a message. If you’re not sure what’s wrong, or you don’t want to mess with it, our tech team can also come out and take a look at your site for a fair price.

If you’re still having trouble after trying these steps, or you need replacement parts for your globe valve, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help keep your lines running smoothly, no matter the project.
